Why Word Vomit Is OK Sometimes

I love writing - it's the reason I started blogging, it's the reason I took Journalism at uni, it's the reason I took Media, English Lit AND English Lang at A-Level. But it still doesn't mean that I always know what to write about. I was itching to write a blog post tonight. Purely because I really like the release I feel whilst tapping away at my keyboard - letting all my inner thoughts and ideas out, somewhere in the open. But sometimes I'm a bit like 'errrm?' I have nothing to say. Zero. Zilch. Nada. I mean I could go and edit all the photos I took today at the seaside. But I don't feel like editing each photo within an inch of it's life so it looks #goals. I just want to say shit. But what to say...?

Word vomit is a fabulous phrase. Did it start from Mean Girls?? Who knows. It's just speaking without thinking, really. Letting the words just pour out. But it's often seen as a bad thing. And it is a lot of the time. You don't want to start word vomiting in a job interview telling them all about why you really like dogs when the question was 'what would your friends say about you?'. You don't want to start word vomiting in a work presentation that needs to be wrapped up in 5 minutes and you're still on slide 7 out of 20.

But, sometimes, it's OK.

Some of my favourite blog posts to read are the ones that don't really have any structure. That can't really be slotted into a particular genre or be summed up in a simple sentence. That are just full of bits and bats, inconsequential thoughts, random ramblings.

I love this article. It's all about writing as you would vomit. The idea being that you don't think when you vomit *pleasant thought, I know*, you just want to get it all out. So why not do the same with writing every now and again? Don't have a plan, don't have a beginning, a middle and an end. Just go with it.

I like this idea for blog posts. I often sit brainstorming ideas for ages but when it comes to putting pen to paper, I don't have a clue what to say. The idea is there but the words - well, they're just not.

Which is why I think word vomit is okay in blogging. It's essentially like vlogging but in the written form, after all. Vloggers don't really prepare what they're going to say and how they're going to say it, do they? They just sit and speak about whatever's on their mind. And we watch it! It's not riveting stuff. It's life. Unpolished, unfiltered, unedited.

And I like it!

Here's to more of just writing what we want, when we want, how we want. And not feeling like each post has be filled with all the photos, all the words, all the content. It doesn't. People like snippets of daily life, and getting an insight into what people are thinking (well I do, anyway...)

So, just go with it!
